Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP)

A lithium-ion battery cathode chemistry (LiFePO4) praised for high thermal safety, cobalt-free construction, and long cycle life.

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4), commonly known as LFP, is the dominant battery chemistry used in modern residential energy storage systems like the Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase IQ Battery 5P, and FranklinWH aPower.

Unlike Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) chemistries commonly found in older electric vehicles, LFP cells contain zero toxic heavy metals or cobalt. LFP offers a superior thermal runaway threshold of 518°F (270°C) and does not release oxygen when decomposing, making it exceptionally safe for garage and indoor residential mounting.

LFP batteries typically deliver 4,000 to 6,000 complete charge/discharge cycles before dropping to 70% capacity retention, granting them a operational lifespan of 10 to 15 years under daily solar self-consumption schedules.

Why it matters

LFP chemistry provides double the lifespan of legacy NMC batteries and can safely be charged to 100% daily without triggering rapid degradation.

Example

Installing an LFP battery allows you to cycle 100% of its usable capacity every day under peak electric tariffs for 10+ years under warranty.
