Phantom Load (Vampire Draw)
The continuous electrical power consumed by electronic devices and appliances while in standby mode or switched off, often wasting 10% to 20% of residential energy.
Phantom load, also commonly known as vampire draw or standby power, refers to the electric power consumed by electronic devices while they are plugged in but not actively performing their primary function.
Common sources include televisions, gaming consoles, microwave clocks, smart speakers, internet routers, and power adapters with external transformers. Cumulatively, phantom loads typically draw between 100 and 300 continuous watts in modern homes.
During emergency power outages, phantom loads can drain significant battery backup capacity without running any essential household appliances.
Why it matters
Eliminating phantom loads via smart power strips and circuit management can save 3 to 6 kWh per day, extending battery backup duration and reducing annual electricity bills by $150 to $300.
Example
A home with 200W of continuous standby electronics consumes 4.8 kWh every 24 hours—draining over one-third of a standard 13.5 kWh home battery.
